MIKE
Mike is competitive, decisive, and goal-oriented. He enjoys and is motivated by challenging assignments. He is naturally persuasive and convincing. Since his main focus is results he can at times be impatient with others. He enjoys the experience of interacting with others and prefers people with as optimistic an outlook as he has.
Mike prefers communicating through speaking rather than writing. He is team oriented but prefers to be the final decision-maker. He is a situational listener and can talk before thinking.
He dislikes routine and repetitive tasks and prefers an environment of change. Therefore he may get bored easily and move on to new challenges.
MANAGER NOTE:
Currently Mike is losing his focus and strong goal orientation. He is overly adapting to become less verbal and less decisive. He is over analyzing his decisions and fears making mistakes. The reasons for these changes are usually driven by how a person interprets the assessments made of his managerial duties and his results.
Mike may feel that his natural approach to his work and to others needs adjustment. This may be a misperception on his end. He happens to have a natural ability for leadership and he is good at building a strong sense of self in others.
You can help Mike revert back to his natural style by reviewing the attached "General Characteristics" report with him.
THEN ASK HIM:
What do you think about the statements made about you in this report? Do you see yourself interacting with others in these ways? How has your approach to managing others changed recently?
MANAGER NOTE - contd.
Encourage Mike to maintain his natural people and goal oriented focus. He responds well to recognition of his abilities. Focus him on people and action items. Put any details in writing.
BILL
Bill is highly driven and quite demanding. He has a very strong ego. He is motivated by power, authority, and control. He is aggressive in his problem solving abilities. He is results oriented and has a high need to win. Many times he can be argumentative and confrontational.
Bill is quite cautious in his relationships with others and may not be a team player. He also can be skeptical and distrusting. He will be critical and detached. His approach to work will be analytical and task oriented versus people focused.
DM NOTE:
You may need to pay attention to Bill's relationship with Mike and the rest of the management team. Since Bill's focus is geared more towards tasks than people he may try to distance himself from guest satisfaction activities. Bill prefers work that requires him to be the decision maker and the authority.
LAURA
Laura is persuasive, charismatic, and enthusiastic. She by nature enjoys work that revolves around people and building relationships. She is a natural people pleaser. Her strenghts lie in her ability to see the "big dream" and communicate it. Teamwork is her preferred approach to achieving results. However, many times main taining good relationships will be more important than acieving results. Many times decisions will be delayed in order to reach consensus.
She can be overly optimistic about results, outcomes, and others committemnt to achieving goals. She may expend too much energy in convincing others to a point of view.
DM NOTE:
Currently Laura is becoming quite accomodating even when she may have a different point of view or another opinion. She appears to be losing some of her drive and energy. This may be the result of her need to be agreeable in order to avoid conflict. This adaptive behavior is not necessarily wrong however too much accomodation will eventually cause her to become disallusioned about her contribution to the team and to the overall results.
You can help Mike build Laura's strengths and boost her productivity by advising him to ask her questions about her ideas and opinions and listen closer to her answers and suggestions. Laura will work hard and be loyal if she receives recogntion and praise that is specific. Most people are motivated by praise but Laura relies on positive feedback more than the average worker.
Also, While pleasing others is an excellent trait to have in the guest service business it may at times backfire on Laura in her reltionships with her employees. She places a high value on being liked and may tend as a result to be overly lenient with her direct reports and give them the beenfit of doubt. She can also be overly optimistic in her appraisal of others. Mike needs to be aware of this trait and question her assessment of those that work for her.
NORMAN
Norman brings a systematic, methodical, and deliberate approach to his work. He is quite predictable and consistent. He prefers work that is constant without many changes. When working with others he places a high value on building solid long-lasting relationships. He is patient and empathetic.
Norman is an excellent listener and prefers listening to talking. He may appear to others to be non-emotional since he tends to mask his feelings and emotions. For this reason he may be difficult to read and it may frustrate others because they are unable to discern Rolbert's true feelings and opinions.
Currently Norman is experiencing an overlly high level of stress. He is communicating less and is fearful of making mistakes. He is cautious by nature but has become even more so. He will not divulge his thoughts in order to avoid conflict or any confrontation. He will agree at all costs.
ASK HIM:
What changes have you seen in your approach to your job recently? What do you think is causing your approach to change?
DM NOTE:
You can help Mike understand Norman's behavior preferences by reviewing Norman's "General Characteristics" report with him. Norman may be a challenge for Mike since their styles differ greatly. But if managed in the right way Norman can be a good complement to Mike. Norman has a natural ability to ask good questions, listen patiently, and determine facts. As a result he obtains information from others that Mike - being a different style - would not.
Norman is also loyal and devoted but needs to have security. This is represented to Norman by a sincere interest in him as a person and in his personal goals and ideas. It will be well worth the effort for Mike to take the time to ask Norman questions about himself in a casual, informal way. Reassure Norman about his job regularly and in a sincere way if this is warranted. It will go a long way to ensuring Norman's comittment and will greatly improve his productivity.
